Bosnia

20 years-muslim-female

1. It is hard to talk about Bosnia in WWI since it was part of Austria so Bosniak fought on side of Austria. However, Bosniak Regiments were the best regiments in Austrian army. As for WWII there are no specific personalities from any ex-Yugoslav countries. It was a gerrilla for held mostly on Bosnian territory and it was against fascism. Some famous are Skender Kulenović and Dzemal Bijedić.

2. Pan-Slavenism in South-Slavs has drawn Bosniaks to unite with their neighbors. Later it was a problem because nationalist politics from Serbia and Croatia didn't let Bosniaks have their own nation (had to declare as Croats or Serbs and later as "Muslims" or "Other"), dendied their language. Bosnian people were nationless and languageless during that period.

4. Not being part of any war is better so of course only better things could have happened-

5. In First World War my dad's family in Eastern Bosnia was slaughtered and forced to leave by chetnik forces. (Local supporters of Nazi ideology).

6. Wars in my opinion never have positive aspects.

7. In First World War Bosnia has lost territories it had during the Ottoman Empire and in Austria-Hungary and which were given to it in Berlin congress. It is region called today's Sandzak and these are part of Montenegro and Serbia.

8. Yes. I think it is very hard thing to aviod.

9. People usually remember them on day when Nazism fell down, and if it is some bigger heroes or battles or movements, there are monuments. There are also many movies which play on TV on these dates.

Spain

1.       Due to the fact that Spain was neutral in the first world war, it is emphasized a personality which played an important role only in the second world war: Francisco Franco, military dictator, he was the general who, in 1939, instituted the military dictatorship.

2.       The event which affected the development of the country was the Civil War (1936-1939), a social, political and military conflict which had devastating economical consequences, an event which had no direct connection to the World Wars.

3.       Information sources: history books, the internet.

4.       Since Spain was allied with Germany during the Second World War, this caused the country's isolation for a long time on an international level.

5.       My family wasn't affected by none of the World Wars.

6.       At the time of the First World War, Spain was a country with a very poor economy. After the initial negative impact, the war brought an authentic economical development due to Spain's declaration of neutrality. The countries involved in the war needed food supplies, weapons, uniforms, metal and coal which meant that all foreign competition disappeared entirely.

7.       During the Second World War, in 1940 Spain occupied the Tangier International Zone (territory which belonged to Morocco). In 1945, the Spanish army abandoned the city, declaring it an 'open city'.

8.       Even if, for a short amount of time, Spain was allied with Germany in the Second World War, no social or cultural influences were ascertained.

9.       There is no habit of celebrating the sacrifices of the war heroes. A monument called 'The Unknown Soldier' was built and it was placed in Plaza De La Lealtad (Loyalty's Square), Madrid.

School, relatives who fought in the war, documentaries, and movies.

4. How do you think your country's evolution would have been affected if it had not participated in the World Wars?

My great-grandfather fought in the war, flying fighter planes in Europe. The war was for him, like many of his fellow soldiers, quite traumatic and he would focus/talk about it for the rest of his life. At times, this obsession on the war would lead to a poor relationship with his family members.

7. Did your country lose or gain territories? Which are those?

None gained or lost.

8. Do you consider that you were socially or culturally influenced after the alliances with the other nationalities?

The US formed a lasting relationship with Western European countries, in which we have shared a very similar culture since the War.

9. Do you commemorate the sacrifice of the heroes who died on the battlefield? How? Do you have days or events or monuments dedicated to them?

S.U.A

My name is Jovanka Balac, I was born in Mostar, Bosnia. I have lived in.. Chicago, Dallas, Texas, Romania, and now, Dublin, Ireland. And I am 27 years old. I will answer these questions for America.

  1. I don't really know of someone that played a role in both wars but I know that Franklin D. Roosevelt was the president during WWII and he played a huge role in the war.

America remained neutral during WWI while Wildrow Wilson was president. He did however, issue his "Fourteen Points of Peace".

  1. The bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.
  2. History class in school.
  3. I think the American people would have been very disappointed with their government if the USA did not get involved. Especially in WWII.
  4. Since I am not a born American and am Bosnian. Both wars affected me very much. The first was was started with the assassination of the Archduke of Austria Hungary by a Serbian vigilante. My family was directly affected by the second world war, mainly my mother's side. The Croatian army was a Fascist one and sided with the Germans. They would go into villages within Bosnia and Serbia looking for all men. They would then take all of the men and massacre them and throw them into mass graves. All the men in my grandfather's family had this done to them except for him because he was a little baby and his mother managed to dress him up as a girl and hide him from the army.
  5. I have a firm anti-war enthusiast so I don't really think there was any good. It all depends on how you look at it. The most positive aspect is that the Fascist Regime was terminated but this is only one part of what was going on during WWII.
  6. America-neither.

Bosnia and Serbia gained territory during from WWI .

  1. I think I am too young and enough time has passed that many of those alliances don't regularly affect society anymore.
  2. In America we have a holiday called Memorial Day that is the remembrance all fallen soldiers, not only in the 2 world wars. There is also Veteran's Day.
